Interview Tips

  • Use MapQuest to verify route and travel time needed to arrive on time
  • Dress professionally – read “Act the Part” in Today in PT magazine
  • Print out an extra copy of your resume
  • Bring a handout of any projects you completed during your clinical affiliations, such as a newsletter article, in-service handout, or home exercise program diagram
Practice briefly describing:
  • Yourself – character, motivations, philosophies
  • Your strengths and weaknesses
  • Your accomplishments
  • Why you want this particular job in this practice setting
  • What you have to offer the facility
  • Your short- and long-term career goals (what do you see yourself doing in one year? Five years?)
Watch for illegal or inappropriate questions relating to:
  • Your age
  • Your marital status
  • Your ethnic background
  • Your plans for having a family
  • How old your children are
  • Your spouse’s job
Get ready to ask the interviewer about:
  • Anticipated work hours and whether you will be compensated on an hourly or salary basis
  • Size and type of patient caseload
  • Whether there is an expectation for employees to float between facilities
  • How much supervision is available, and if students will be mentored with difficult patient cases
  • Why this job opening exists, and why the last PT/PTA left the position
  • How much time is devoted to documentation, and when that time is provided (during lunch, at the end of the day, etc.)
  • Frequency and availability of staff in-services
  • Continuing education benefits (dollars and days per year)
  • Expectation of participation in community and physician PR
  • When position is available
Send a follow-up note to each person you interviewed to thank them for their time and reiterate your eagerness to join the team at the facility

Once you receive the job offer, prepare to consider and potentially negotiate:
  • Sign-on bonus
  • The compensation package
  • Hourly/salary rate
  • Continuing education reimbursement (fees and days off)
  • Professional membership dues
