Dream Job: This is a job located in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula. Could it be yours? The Job: Join Bay Cliff Health Camp's team of physical, speech, occupational, and music therapists and instructors for the visually and hearing impaired for a unique, rewarding experience in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula.
Why this is a dream job: Bay Cliff is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help children and teenagers with physical disabilities lead fuller, more independent lives. Along with standard PT sessions, campers improve mobility as they maneuver wheelchairs or walkers on hikes, practice trunk control while roasting marshmallows or kayaking, and work on breath control while singing camp songs. Bay Cliff is an innovative way for therapists to see children "outside" of therapy.
Types of patients and injuries you would work with: Each PT has a caseload averaging 18 campers out of the 180 who attend each summer. Campers range in age from 3 to 17 and have diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, dwarfism, limb loss, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and spinal cord injury.
Word on the street - what your colleague has to say about this employer: "Bay Cliff is so rewarding! Where else can you play with kids in the North Woods, on the beach, in the pool, on the playground, and in the therapy gym? It's a wonderful place to enjoy your summer and get the most pleasure out of it," says Denise Denholm, an Illinois PT who has worked at Bay Cliff.
What you could do for fun if you lived here: Bay Cliff is on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula. Outdoor diversions include hiking, biking, world-class fishing, swimming, kayaking, nature photography, and camping. Marquette is just 26 miles away and has been recognized by national publications as one of the best places to live.
What you would be paid: Salary, plus comfortable housing and home-cooked meals, are provided for all staff. PTs earn $3,500 for eight weeks. This summer's program runs June 8 through Aug. 3.
