Dream Job: This is a job located in the beautiful Wine Country. Could it be yours?

The Job: Work as a physical therapist for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, which seeks PTs to join a large, multidisciplinary rehabilitation team at its Yountville facility. This 1,100-bed retirement community serves disabled veterans in all levels of care, from inpatient acute care to outpatient rehab.

Why this is a dream job: The Veterans Home at Yountville is located in Napa County, the heart of California's pastoral Wine Country. Set on 550 beautiful acres, it's like a village unto itself, complete with a post office, golf course, and museum. Its residents have served in wars and conflicts ranging from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan, so PTs who enjoy history will have much to learn from the men and women residing there.

Types of patients and injuries you would work with: A typical caseload averages six to 10 residents per day, and includes patients with orthopedic issues, strokes, and postsurgical conditions. With five distinct levels of care, all team members have an opportunity to practice a variety of skills, provide inservices to other departments, and develop special programs.

Word on the street - what your colleague has to say about this employer: "Therapists here are able to spend the time to work with veterans and provide them with true quality care. We are able to provide the services and equipment they need to continue to remain as independent as possible. The Veterans Home is a satisfying and challenging place to work due to the many levels of care provided," says Christina Knepper, RPT.

What you could do for fun if you lived here: Among Yountville's best attributes are its spas, B&Bs, hot air balloons, art galleries, world-renowned restaurants, and nearby wineries. The city of Napa is just 10 miles south and features Copia: The American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts; the Oxbow Public Market; and the Silverado Resort. The Veterans Home itself boasts a nine-hole golf course, the Napa Valley Museum, and a 1,200-seat theater that's home to the Napa Valley Symphony. What you would be paid: Salaries range from $54,648 to $67,800, commensurate with experience. As a California State Civil Service position, it offers a full benefits package including retirement, medical, dental, vision, sick leave, vacation, and 13 paid holidays yearly. Subsidized housing on the grounds is also a possibility.
