Dream Job: This is a job in the bountiful Midwest. Could it be yours?
The Job: Staff physical therapist at the new Center for Physical Rehabilitation and Aquatics in Peru, Ill. The center is located at the local YMCA campus, and is run by the Illinois Valley Community Hospital (IVCH).
Why this is a dream job: Peru is the largest city in the Illinois Valley, yet is neighbored by scenic farming communities. The city is located only an hour and a half southwest of Chicago. The IVCH center is a two-story facility encompassing 15,000 square feet of exam rooms; an open treatment gym; a heated 1,500-square-foot therapy pool, and more than 30 pieces of cutting-edge equipment, including an unweighting system that lets patients exercise even if their walking ability is severely limited. The center provides specialized submersible bicycles, treadmills, and elliptical trainers for use within the pool.
Types of patients and injuries you would work with: Patients range from young adults with sports injuries to senior citizens with cardiovascular, arthritic, or neurological conditions. Certain diseases and injuries are connected to the local farming, manufacturing, and chemical processing industries. Typical patient caseloads are 12 to 14 clients per day.
Word on the street - what your colleague has to say about this employer: "The thought and concern for not only the patients, but the staff as well in the design of this clinic is spectacular. There is every piece of equipment in order to treat our patients in a variety of ways, [including] access to the local YMCA to eventually progress outpatients on their own. The variety in clients and ages keeps every day interesting, and a challenge to determine new ideas and techniques," says Brian R. Butler, DPT, ATC.
What you could do for fun if you lived here: The Illinois Valley and vicinity is home to Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks, which between them offer hiking, camping, horseback riding, boating, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and nature photography. Peru and its twin city, LaSalle, boast restaurants with an international array of cuisine, and neighboring communities are known for great antiquing.
What you would be paid: From $50,000 to $72,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Benefits include full healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision), life insurance, vacation time, and 403b educational assistance.
